SEO for landscapers

Landscaping SEO that is ready before spring bookings open — not after your diary is already half empty.

Landscaping demand follows the calendar. Design-build enquiries start in late winter, lawn care and maintenance sign-ups peak in spring, and snow and clean-up work arrives with the first cold weeks. The companies that get those enquiries are the ones already showing on the map and in the results when people start looking. Landscaping SEO is the work that puts you there: a Google Business Profile that follows Google’s rules, service and project pages live months before each season, honest price and water-rule content, your licence details consistent everywhere, and reviews earned the right way. We do it for landscapers, lawn care companies and design-build firms in the US, landscapers and garden designers in the UK, landscaping and snow firms in Canada and landscapers in Australia, and we report from your own data.

The short answer

What is landscaping SEO?

Landscaping SEO is the work that gets a landscaping or lawn care company found on Google — in the map results, the ordinary results and AI answers — by homeowners and property managers in the areas you cover. It covers your Google Business Profile, a page for each service, project pages named by town or suburb, useful pages for the areas you really work in, structured data that tells Google what you do, and a steady flow of genuine reviews.

The foundations are the same as for any trade, and our contractor SEO page covers area pages and seasonal planning in general. What makes landscaping different is the mix of very different jobs under one name — a regular lawn cut and a full garden build — plus climate and water rules that change what people search for, and licence rules on hardscape, irrigation and pesticides that apply to your website too. The top landscaping SEO pages we read cover keywords, links, reviews and seasons, but none of them deal with licences, prices or water rules, and almost none look outside the US. This page is about those.

Seasons

When should a landscaping company start SEO for the busy season?

Months before it. A new page usually takes weeks or months to rank, and homeowners planning a spring build start comparing landscapers in winter. If the page does not exist then, it will not rank in time.
Design-build pages in winterPatio, wall and garden design pages live before people start planning, so they have history when enquiries arrive.
Lawn care before springProgramme and treatment pages ready before the first sign-ups, with the visits each plan includes.
Local climate detailWhat your soil and weather mean for lawns and plants — clay, sand, drought, frost, monsoon or snow.
Snow and clean-up in autumnSnow pages with the trigger, season dates and tiers, live before the first forecast.
Profile posts and photosReal project photos and short posts as each job finishes, so your profile looks active when people check.

Cost, water and rules searches

How should landscapers target cost, water and planning searches?

With pages that are accurate and dated. Homeowners search things like “patio cost [city]”, “retaining wall cost”, “turf replacement rebate”, “xeriscape [city]” and, in the UK, “do I need planning permission to pave my front garden”. These people are close to a decision, so the searches are worth ranking for. They are also searches most landscaping sites never answer — only a handful of the 255 sites we reviewed showed any prices at all.

The answers depend on where you work. In England, more than 5 m² of new hard surface in a front garden that drains to the road needs planning permission unless it is permeable. In Southern Nevada, AB 356 bans Colorado River water on non-functional turf at properties other than single-family homes from 1 January 2027, and in Colorado SB24-005 limits new non-functional turf on commercial and HOA land. In NSW, structural landscaping over $5,000 needs a licensed contractor, which is itself a common search.

So we write cost and rules content as a guide, not a pitch: typical ranges and what changes them, which rules apply where you work, what the homeowner needs to do, and a “last checked” date with the official link. Price pages follow the single-price rules of the ACCC and the Competition Bureau. It ranks because it is useful, and it keeps your claims accurate while it does.

Google Business Profile

How should a landscaping company set up a Google Business Profile?

Usually as a service-area business, following Google’s guidelines. If customers do not visit your yard or office, hide the address and list the areas you serve; Google allows up to 20 service areas and suggests keeping them within about two hours’ drive of your base. Use your real trading name — adding “Best Landscaping Denver” to the name breaks the rules and risks suspension. Choose the primary category that matches most of your work, such as landscaper, lawn care service or landscape designer, and add the others as secondary categories.

If you run ads too, Google’s Local Services Ads screen businesses with background, insurance and — where local law requires — licence checks. Keeping the same licence details on your site, profile and ads makes those checks simpler, and it is the same number many states, provinces and Australian states already require in your advertising.

Keywords

Which searches bring landscaping and lawn care jobs?

Landscaping searches split by job size, season and country. Lawn care SEO and design-build SEO target different people, so a good plan covers the searches closest to the work you want first.

Design-buildlandscaper near me, landscape design [city], garden design [town]Project pages named by area, a clear process and a design-fee guide

Structured data

What structured data should a landscaping website use?

Schema.org has types for roofers, plumbers and HVAC businesses, but none for landscaping. None of the top-ranking landscaping SEO pages we read pointed that out. We use the closest type and fill in the details that make it clear.
PropertyWhat it tells Google
@type: HomeAndConstructionBusinessA local business that works on homes and properties — the closest schema.org type for a landscaping company
areaServedThe towns, counties or regions you really cover, matching your Google service areas
hasCredentialYour licence or registration, with the issuing body — the same number shown on the page
hasOfferCatalogThe services you offer, such as garden design, hardscape, lawn care, maintenance and snow removal
openingHoursSpecificationYour real office hours, so they match your profile
review markupLeave it off your own business page: Google’s review snippet rules do not show stars for reviews a local business publishes about itself
Reviews

What are the rules on landscaping reviews?

Ask every customer, never buy them, and never fake them. In the US, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews, buying positive reviews and suppressing negative ones. In the UK, fake reviews are a banned practice under the DMCC Act 2024. In Canada, the Competition Bureau warns that reviews by employees or owners that hide the connection can breach the Competition Act. In Australia, the ACCC bans fake, selectively edited and undisclosed-incentive reviews. Google’s own policies also prohibit discounts or gifts in return for reviews.

Landscaping has a natural moment to ask: at handover, when the garden looks its best, and again after the first season when the planting has grown in. We set up a simple text or email request at those points, ask for a photo with the review, and draft reply templates for praise, complaints and weather delays. When you show reviews on your site, show where they came from and how many there are — several sites we reviewed showed empty review blocks or unsourced “5/5” badges.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How long does landscaping SEO take to work?
Profile and technical fixes can show within weeks; new service, project and area pages usually take a few months to build momentum. That is why design-build and lawn care pages should go live well before spring. Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings — the audit tells you where you start.
How much does landscaping SEO cost?
It depends on how many areas and services you cover and how competitive they are. We quote after the audit, so you know exactly what is included before you commit.
Is lawn care SEO different from landscaping SEO?
The foundations are the same, but the searches differ. Lawn care customers want a programme, a price per visit and a company that comes to their street; design-build customers want to see projects and a process. We plan separate pages for each so neither gets buried.
Should I create a page for every town near me?
Only for towns you really serve. Pages for towns you rarely work in, with the same text and a new town name, are what Google calls doorway pages. Project pages named by area are a better way to show where you work — see contractor SEO for how we build area pages.
Is SEO or Google Ads better for landscapers?
They do different jobs. Ads and Local Services Ads can bring enquiries straight away but stop when you stop paying; SEO builds visibility that keeps working. Many landscapers use ads to fill the diary in spring and SEO for the rest of the year.
Will landscaping SEO help with AI search answers?
Yes. The same foundations — consistent business details, clear service and project pages and genuine reviews — are what AI assistants rely on. See AI search optimization.
Do we need a new website for landscaping SEO?
Not always. If your current site is fast and easy to edit, we work with it. If it holds you back, see landscaping website design.
