Plumbing SEO

SEO for plumbers that fills the diary — emergencies and planned work.

Plumbing searches come in two very different kinds. Someone with water through the ceiling wants the nearest plumber who will answer the phone now; someone planning a new bathroom or water heater compares three or four firms over a week. Plumbing SEO has to win both — and it has to do it inside Google’s rules for service-area businesses and your local rules on licence numbers. That is what we do for plumbing firms in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

The short answer

What is SEO for plumbers?

It is the work that gets a plumbing business found on Google — in the map results, in the ordinary results and in AI answers — by people who need a plumber in the areas you cover. In practice that means a Google Business Profile set up the way Google requires for businesses that travel to customers, a page for each job you want more of, a website that loads fast on a phone with a weak signal, and steady, genuine reviews.

The difference from generic “local SEO” is that plumbing demand splits in two. Emergency searches — burst pipe, no hot water, blocked drain — are decided in minutes, mostly on the map and by whoever is open and answers. Planned work — bathroom refits, water heater or boiler replacements, repiping — is researched, compared and decided on trust and price. We build for both, and we measure them separately.

Two kinds of search

How do emergency and planned plumbing searches differ?

The same customer can be in either mood. What wins the job is different.
Emergency: “burst pipe plumber near me”
  • Decided in minutes, usually on a phone
  • Won mostly in the map results
  • Opening hours and call button matter most
  • Reviews mentioning fast response help
  • A short “what to do now” page earns trust
Planned: “water heater replacement cost”
  • Researched over days, often on a laptop
  • Won by detailed service pages
  • “From” prices and what changes them
  • Photos of real jobs and your team
  • Clear quotes and booking
Google Business Profile

How should a plumber set up a Google Business Profile?

As a service-area business, following Google’s guidelines. If customers do not visit your premises, hide the address and list the areas you serve instead. Google allows up to 20 service areas and suggests keeping the boundary within about two hours’ drive of your base. A virtual office or a mailbox address is not eligible unless it is staffed during business hours — a common reason plumbing profiles get suspended.

The business name must be your real trading name. Adding “Emergency Plumber [City]” to the name breaks Google’s rules and risks suspension, even though competitors get away with it for a while. We set the primary category, list your services, set honest opening hours — including whether you really answer at night — and add photos of your vans, team and finished work.

Licence numbers

Do plumbers have to show a licence number on their website and ads?

In many places, yes — and Google checks licences too. These are examples from official sources; your local board or regulator has the final word, and this is a summary, not legal advice.
WhereWhat the rules say
CaliforniaThe CSLB requires your licence number in all advertising — including websites, online ads and directory listings.
FloridaFlorida law (s.489.119) requires your certification or registration number in every advertisement, regardless of medium.
New South WalesNSW rules require the licensee’s name and licence number in all advertising, including online, and a full price wherever a partial price is shown.
QueenslandThe QBCC requires your licence name and number in ads — and counts websites and Facebook pages as ads.
UK (gas work)Domestic gas work in Great Britain must be done by a Gas Safe registered business, and the HSE has prosecuted unregistered fitters for using the Gas Safe logo online. Only show it if you are registered for the work you advertise.
Google adsLocal Services Ads screen plumbing businesses with business, insurance and — where local law requires — licence checks before ads run.
Sources checked October 2026. We put licence details in your site footer, schema and Google listings so they match everywhere.

Prices

Should plumbers show prices on their website?

Yes — as honest “from” prices with a line on what changes them. Price is one of the main things people search for before booking planned work (“water heater replacement cost”, “cost to unblock a drain”), and a page that answers it ranks and converts better than one that hides it. Mention what moves the final figure: access, parts, time of day and call-out fees.

Check your local rules on how prices are shown. In the UK, the advertising code expects prices aimed at consumers to include VAT and any unavoidable charges. In New South Wales, a partial price must be shown alongside the full price. We set the price wording with you so it is accurate, compliant and easy to update.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How long does SEO take for a plumbing business?
Fixes to your Google Business Profile and site can show within weeks. New job and area pages usually take a few months to gain ground, depending on how competitive your area is. The audit gives you an honest view of where you start.
Is SEO or Google Ads better for plumbers?
They do different jobs. Ads and Local Services Ads can bring calls from day one but stop when you stop paying; SEO builds calls that keep coming. Many plumbers use both while SEO grows.
Can I rank in towns where I do not have an office?
In the map results, your service areas and distance both matter, so towns far from your base are harder. Useful area pages on your website help you rank in the ordinary results for those towns.
Should I put “emergency plumber” in my business name?
No. Google’s guidelines say the name must be your real business name; adding keywords can get the profile suspended.
Do I need a new website for plumbing SEO?
Not always. If your site is fast and easy to edit, we work with it. If not, see plumbing website design.
How much does SEO for plumbers cost?
It depends on how many areas and services you cover and how competitive they are. We quote after the audit, so you know exactly what is included.
