SEO for medical clinics

Healthcare SEO that brings in new patients, not just rankings.

Healthcare SEO, often called medical SEO, is the work that gets your clinic found when local patients search for a doctor, an urgent appointment, a service or a condition. Done properly, it means a Google Business Profile set up the way Google’s rules allow for practices and practitioners, a clinician-reviewed page for every service you want more of, a site Google can trust with health topics, measurement that never sends patient details to ad platforms, and reviews earned and answered without putting privacy at risk. We do it for clinics and doctors in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, in the map results, the ordinary results and AI answers, and we report from your own data.

The short answer

What is healthcare SEO?

Healthcare SEO is the work that gets a clinic, practice or doctor found on Google by people about to book care in the areas you serve. It covers your Google Business Profiles, a page for each service, condition and location you really offer, content reviewed by your clinicians, structured data that says you are a medical clinic, honest reviews and measurement that respects patient privacy.

The guides that rank for this search all give the same advice: local SEO, claim your profile, blog, build backlinks, follow E-E-A-T. What they leave out is what makes healthcare different: tracking rules that make the usual marketing tags risky, Google’s rules for practitioners versus practices, review replies that can breach privacy law, and regulators that ban testimonials or medicine names in some countries. This page is about those.

What we do

What does healthcare SEO actually involve?

Most of a clinic’s new patients from search come from three places on Google: the map results, the ordinary results for service and condition searches, and increasingly the AI answers above both. Healthcare SEO works on all three.

Trust

Why does Google hold medical websites to a higher standard?

Because health is what Google calls “Your Money or Your Life” content. Its guidance on helpful content and its quality rater guidelines ask whether a page shows real experience and expertise, who wrote it, and whether it agrees with expert consensus. A condition page that reads like generic marketing copy, or that promises results no clinician would, works against you.

So we write medical content the way a careful clinician would explain it to a patient: what the service is, who it is for, what happens, how long it takes, risks, alternatives and when to seek urgent help instead. Each page names the clinician who reviewed it, with their qualifications and registration number. It is more work than buying generic articles, and it is the kind of page that keeps ranking after core updates.

Measurement

How do you measure healthcare SEO without breaking patient privacy?

By counting results without sending health details anywhere they should not go. Most SEO and marketing setups add an ad pixel and a full analytics tag to every page. On a clinic site that includes condition pages, booking and the portal link. HHS’s guidance on online tracking warns that tags on those pages can disclose protected health information; a 2024 court ruling narrowed the part about ordinary public pages, so check with your regulator or adviser on the current position. In the UK, health data is special-category data under UK GDPR. 14 of the 66 US clinic home pages we reviewed already loaded the Meta pixel. None of the top-ranking healthcare SEO guides we read mentioned this.

We measure what matters, calls, bookings and enquiries, with analytics configured without personal details, no marketing pixels on booking, forms, portal or condition pages, and conversion counts taken from your booking system where it allows it. You still see which pages and searches bring patients; the ad platforms do not see who they are.

Google Business Profile

Should each doctor have their own Google Business Profile?

Often, yes, but only in the way Google’s guidelines allow. Google treats doctors and other clinicians who see the public as individual practitioners, so they can have profiles of their own. A clinic with several practitioners should have one profile for each staffed location and, if you want them, separate profiles for the individual clinicians. A solo doctor who practises under a clinic brand shares one profile, named in the format Google sets out.

What gets clinic profiles suspended is well known: service or town keywords in the business name, extra profiles for one location, separate profiles for each department, and addresses where no patient is seen. We set the structure up correctly from the start, choose the primary category with you, and fill in services, hours, walk-in times, accessibility details and photos so the profile answers patients’ questions before they call. In Australia and parts of Canada, testimonials are restricted, so reviews stay on Google and are not copied into your advertising.

Keywords

Which searches bring new patients to a clinic?

Not all searches are equal. A clinic gets the best return from searches closest to a booking, and from services most competitors cover badly. The wording also changes by country.
Search typeExampleWhat wins it
Near me / localdoctor near me, private GP [town], walk-in clinic [city], physio near meA complete Google Business Profile, reviews and a strong location page
Urgenturgent care open now, same-day GP appointment [town]Accurate hours, walk-in or wait-time details and a call button that works
Serviceskin cancer check [city], sports physio [town], travel vaccinations [town]A detailed service page with fees or insurance, process and the clinicians who provide it
New patientsfamily doctor accepting new patients [city], clinic that takes [insurance]Clear, current intake status, insurance or uninsured fees and registry links
Questionswhen to see a doctor for a cough, how long does physio takeClinician-reviewed answers with clear “when to get urgent help” guidance
Structured data

What structured data should a medical clinic website use?

Structured data tells Google exactly what your clinic is. Schema.org’s MedicalClinic type covers it, and only one of the top-ranking healthcare SEO guides we read named it.
PropertyWhat it tells Google
@type: MedicalClinicThis is a medical clinic: a local business and a medical organization at this address
name, address, telephoneYour clinic name and details, matching your Google Business Profile exactly
openingHoursSpecificationYour real hours, including walk-in times, evenings and weekends
medicalSpecialtyThe areas of medicine you provide, such as dermatology or physiotherapy
isAcceptingNewPatientsWhether you are taking new patients right now
Physician (for each doctor)Name, specialty and the clinic they work at, linked to their profile page with registration details
Google does not show review stars for reviews a business hosts about itself, so we do not add self-serving review markup.
Reviews

How should a clinic reply to online reviews?

Politely, briefly and without confirming that the reviewer is a patient. That last part is where clinics get caught out. The US Office for Civil Rights has penalised healthcare providers for replying to online reviews with details of the reviewer’s care, and in the UK, Canada and Australia the same reply can breach privacy law or professional rules. A reply as simple as “we checked your notes and…” can be a breach.

A safe reply thanks the reviewer, explains your general approach without referring to their care, and invites them to contact the clinic directly. We write reply templates with you for praise, complaints and fake reviews, and build a simple routine for asking every patient for an honest review at the right moment. Google’s review policy bans rewarding reviews or asking only happy patients, and in Ontario, Alberta and Australia testimonials cannot be reused in your advertising.

Aesthetics and medicines

Can an aesthetics clinic do SEO for Botox searches?

Carefully, and differently by country. In the UK, the ASA says prescription-only medicines such as Botox must not be named on home pages, in logos, in testimonials or in ads, and in Australia the Therapeutic Goods Act restricts advertising them to the public. Pages built to rank for a medicine name are where many aesthetics clinics drift into advertising it. 5 of the UK clinic home pages we reviewed named Botox or anti-wrinkle injections.

So we build aesthetics SEO around concerns and consultations: lines and wrinkles, volume loss, skin conditions, excessive sweating, each with a consultation page led by a named, registered prescriber. That matches how many patients search anyway, and keeps the pages useful and on the right side of the rules. We check the wording with you and your regulator’s guidance before anything goes live.

Choosing an agency

How do you choose a healthcare SEO company?

Ask questions that separate real work from reports. Who will own your Google Business Profiles, website and content if you leave? (It should be you.) Who writes and reviews health content, and is a clinician involved? What tracking will they add, and to which pages? Will you see calls, bookings and enquiries, or only rankings? Does the agency know your regulator’s rules on testimonials, medicine names and claims? And how long is the contract, and why?

Be wary of guaranteed first-page or number-one rankings, of fake or incentivised reviews, of extra profiles for one location, and of “HIPAA-compliant” claims with no business associate agreement behind them. Each can leave a clinic worse off than before. With us you own every account, page and report, and our reports come from your own data.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How long does healthcare SEO take to work?
Fixes to your Google Business Profile and site can show in weeks; new service and location pages usually take a few months to build momentum. It depends on how competitive your area is and where you start from. The audit tells you honestly.
How much does healthcare SEO cost?
It depends on the number of locations, clinicians and services and how competitive your area is. We give you a quote after the audit, so you know exactly what the work includes before you commit.
Is healthcare SEO the same as medical SEO?
Yes, the two names are used for the same work. SEO for doctors usually means the same thing for a single practice or practitioner.
Can you guarantee first-page rankings?
No, and nobody honest can. Google decides rankings. What we can promise is the work: a sound site, correct profiles, clinician-reviewed pages and reporting that shows what is changing.
Do you write blog posts for clinics?
Yes, but only articles that answer questions patients actually ask, drafted by us and reviewed by a clinician at your clinic. We never publish medical advice your clinicians have not checked, and generic health blog posts rarely bring in patients.
Will SEO help with AI search, like ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers?
Yes. The same foundations, clear and consistent clinic details, trustworthy service pages and genuine reviews, are what AI assistants rely on. See AI search optimization.
Do you do SEO for dental practices?
Yes, with its own approach for dental regulators and treatments. See dental SEO.
Do we need a new website for healthcare SEO?
Not always. If your current site is fast, secure and easy to edit, we work with it. If it holds you back, we can rebuild it. See medical website design.
