SEO for construction companies

SEO for construction companies that wins the projects you want — with licence details Google and clients can check.

Construction buyers search slowly. A homeowner looks up builders, then extensions, then costs, then the builder’s name and reviews, over weeks. A commercial buyer searches for contractors in a sector, then checks credentials and past projects before a bid list is drawn up. SEO for construction companies is the work that keeps you in front of both: project pages that answer what people search for, a Google Business Profile that follows Google’s rules, your licence and company details the same everywhere, structured data that says you are a contractor, and reviews earned the right way. We do it for general contractors, remodelers and home builders in the US, builders and fit-out contractors in the UK, contractors and new-home builders in Canada and builders in Australia, and we report from your own data.

The short answer

What is SEO for construction companies?

SEO for construction companies is the work that gets a builder or contractor found on Google — in the map results, the ordinary results and AI answers — by the homeowners, developers and commercial buyers you want as clients. It covers your Google Business Profile, a page for each type of project you build, case studies that prove it, structured data that tells Google you are a contractor and carries your licence, your company details shown consistently, and a steady flow of genuine reviews.

The top pages on construction SEO cover technical fixes, local listings, content, backlinks and AI search. Those are the foundations. What none of them deal with is that building work is licensed and the rules on advertising often include your website and listings, that commercial buyers check credentials before they ever call, and that the words people search with change from country to country. For the trade-wide basics — area pages that are not doorway pages, seasonal planning and schema type by trade — see SEO for contractors. This page is about what is specific to construction.

Keywords

Which searches bring construction clients?

Construction searches split by buyer, project type, stage and country. Home builder SEO and SEO for a commercial general contractor target different people, so a good plan starts with the searches closest to the work you want.
Search typeExampleWhat wins it
Local builderbuilders near me, general contractor [city], home builder [city]A complete profile, a real address or service area, and a home page that says what you build where
Project typehouse extension [town], loft conversion, kitchen remodel, ADU builder, knockdown rebuildOne page per project type, with timelines, a cost range and local case studies
Cost and planningextension cost, cost to build a house, do I need planning permissionHonest cost guides and plain explainers that link the official source
Commercialcommercial contractor [city], design-build firm, tenant fit-out contractorSector pages, delivery models and case studies with scope and duration
Checking you[company name] reviews, [company name] licenceConsistent details everywhere, a licences page and genuine reviews
Country wordsgeneral contractor, remodeler (US); builders, extensions (UK); entrepreneur général (Québec); builder, granny flat (AU)Pages written in the words and spellings used where you build
Project pages

Why are project pages a construction company’s best SEO asset?

Because they are content no competitor can copy. A project page with the place, the type of work, the size, how long it took, the problem you solved and real photos answers the searches people make — “loft conversion in [town]”, “second-storey addition”, “restaurant fit-out” — and proves you have done it. Across our review of 261 builder websites, most portfolios were unlabelled photo walls with no scope, size or timeline, which gives Google and buyers very little to go on.

We turn finished jobs into pages: a short story, the facts in a table, before-and-after photos with descriptive file names and alt text, the reviewer’s words if they agree, and links to the matching service page. Commercial case studies add the sector and delivery model, and project values only where your client allows. Each project page also gives your area pages something genuine to say about that place, which is what keeps them from being doorway pages.

Licence and company details

Why should a builder’s licence number match everywhere?

Because clients check it, regulators expect it, and search engines compare it. In many places the licence or registration number has to appear in advertising: California, Florida, Arizona, Oregon and Massachusetts in the US, Québec’s RBQ number and Ontario’s HCRA licence for new-home builders in Canada, and NSW, Queensland, Victoria, WA and SA in Australia. In the UK there is no builder licence, so your company number and trade-body member numbers do the same job.

We put the same number, with the same company name, on your website, in your structured data, on your Google Business Profile where there is a place for it, and on the directories you use. Mismatches — a trading name on one listing, the registered name on another, an old number on a third — make you harder to verify. In our review, only 14 of 63 US sites and about half of the Australian homeowner-facing sites showed a licence number at all, so getting this right is an easy way to stand out.

Google Business Profile

How should a construction company set up its Google Business Profile?

Following Google’s guidelines, which catch builders out in two places. The name must be your real business name — adding “Builders Leeds”, “Best General Contractor Dallas” or “Custom Homes” breaks the rules and risks suspension. And the address depends on whether clients visit you: a builder who goes to the client’s site and has no office where customers are received should hide the address and list service areas, while a firm with a staffed office or showroom shows it.

Choose the primary category that matches most of your work, such as general contractor, home builder, construction company or a specific trade, and add the others as secondary categories. Post finished projects with photos, so the profile looks active when people compare builders. For how far your service areas should reach, see SEO for contractors.

Commercial search

How does SEO work for commercial contractors?

Commercial buyers search less often but check more. Your site has to rank for the sector and then pass a credentials check without a phone call.
Sector pagesHealthcare, education, industrial, retail fit-out — each with projects, delivery models and the people who lead that work.
Case studies with factsScope, size, duration and outcome, and values only where your client allows.
A prequalification pageLicences, insurance, bonding and safety status in one place, with a downloadable pack — real figures only.
Subcontractor and bid pagesA clear route for trades, so they find you instead of your general enquiry inbox.
News and project updatesContract awards, completions and community work that earn links and mentions from local and trade press.
AI search answersClear facts about what you build and where, which AI assistants rely on when someone asks for a contractor.Learn more →
Structured data

What structured data should a construction company website use?

Schema.org has a GeneralContractor type under HomeAndConstructionBusiness. None of the top-ranking construction SEO pages we read named a type. We use the right one and fill in the details that make your firm checkable. For other trades, see the table on SEO for contractors.
PropertyWhat it tells Google
@type: GeneralContractorA general building or remodeling contractor — or HomeAndConstructionBusiness, or a trade type, where that fits better
hasCredentialYour licence or registration number with the issuing body — the same number shown on the page
address and areaServedYour real office or service areas, matching your Google profile
legalName and identifierYour registered company name and number, where you have one
knowsLanguageThe languages you work in, such as French in Québec or Spanish in many US cities
hasOfferCatalogThe project types you build, matching your service pages
review markupLeave it off your own business page: Google’s review snippet rules do not show stars for reviews a local business publishes about itself
Reviews and claims

What are the rules on builder reviews and claims?

Ask every client when the job is signed off, never buy reviews, and never fake them — Google’s own policies prohibit incentives and fake engagement. In the US, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews, buying positive reviews and suppressing negative ones. In the UK, the CMA treats fake and concealed incentivised reviews as unlawful. In Canada, the Competition Bureau warns that reviews by staff or owners that hide the connection can breach the Competition Act. In Australia, the ACCC bans fake, selectively edited and undisclosed-incentive reviews.

Claims follow the same logic. “#1”, “premier”, “100% on time” and “most awarded” need evidence under the FTC Endorsement Guides, the UK CAP Code and Australian consumer law, and we saw them unsupported in all four countries. We write specific, provable claims instead — years trading from your founding date, projects completed, the award with its year — and set up the request routine described on SEO for contractors.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How long does SEO for construction companies take to work?
Profile and technical fixes can show within weeks; new project and service pages usually take a few months to build momentum, depending on competition where you build. Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings — the audit tells you where you start.
How much does construction SEO cost?
It depends on how many areas, project types and sectors you want to target and how competitive they are. We quote after the audit, so you know exactly what is included before you commit.
What is the difference between this and contractor SEO?
Our contractor SEO page covers what every home-service trade shares: area pages, seasons and schema by trade. Construction SEO adds what builders need on top: project pages, licence and company details everywhere, commercial and prequalification search, and country-specific wording.
Should we create a page for every town we build in?
Only for places you really work, with real projects to show there. Pages that repeat the same text with a new town name are what Google calls doorway pages. Project pages usually give area pages the substance they need.
Do commercial contractors need SEO?
Yes, but a different kind. Buyers search by sector and check credentials, so sector pages, case studies with facts and a prequalification page matter more than map rankings.
Will construction SEO help with AI search answers?
Yes. The same foundations — consistent company and licence details, clear project and service pages and genuine reviews — are what AI assistants rely on. See AI search optimization.
Do we need a new website for construction SEO?
Not always. If your current site is fast and easy to edit, we work with it. If it holds you back, see construction website design.
