Network security for small business

Office network security: nothing open to the internet, nothing left on factory settings.

Your router and internet modems are the front door to every PC, file and camera in the office — and they are often still on the settings the installer left. We audit them remotely, close what should not be open, lock admin access down, and give you a plan for a more resilient network.
What we check
  • RouterAdmin access, firmware, ports
  • ModemsInternet lines hardened
  • Wi-FiStaff, guests, devices
  • Remote accessPrivate network only
The short answer

What does a small business network security audit cover?

A network security audit checks everything between your office and the internet: the router, the internet provider’s modems, Wi-Fi, and anything reachable from outside. The goal is simple — nothing in the office should be reachable from the internet unless you deliberately decided so, and only the right people should be able to change the network.

When we audited our own office, the router and modems had admin pages reachable more widely than needed and settings nobody had reviewed since installation. After the audit, the only thing reachable from outside was one VPN port, open to a handful of named addresses.

The checklist

What do you check on our router and Wi-Fi?

AreaWhat we look forTypical fix
Port forwardingServices opened to the internet, often by old installers or appsClosed; remote access moved to a private network
Admin accessRouter and modem admin pages reachable from anywhere, default passwordsLocked to named addresses, strong unique passwords
FirmwareOut-of-date router and modem softwareUpdated, with automatic updates where safe
UPnP and WPSFeatures that let devices open ports or join Wi-Fi without a passwordSwitched off unless genuinely needed
Wi-FiWeak encryption, one network for everyoneWPA2/WPA3, separate staff and guest networks
Device addressesPCs, printers and cameras changing addressesFixed addresses (DHCP reservations) and clear names
Separation

Should cameras, guests and staff share one network?

Ideally not. Cameras, printers and smart devices are often the least secure things in an office, and guests should never be on the same network as your file server. Separating them means a weak camera or a visitor’s laptop cannot reach staff PCs.
  • Staff network for PCs, Macs and the file server
  • A separate network for CCTV recorders and cameras
  • A guest Wi-Fi that can reach the internet only
  • A devices network for printers and smart equipment
Four networks, one office
  • StaffPCs, Macs, NAS
  • CCTVCameras isolated
  • GuestsInternet only
  • DevicesPrinters, smart kit
Two internet lines

Can we use two internet connections together?

Yes. Many offices have a second line that sits idle until the first fails. With the right router, both lines can share the load and take over from each other automatically, so a single outage does not stop the office. We design the setup and recommend equipment; installing new hardware needs hands on site, which your staff or a local technician can do with our guidance.
  • Load balancing: both lines in use at once
  • Automatic failover when one line drops
  • Important traffic (calls, ERP) kept on the most reliable line
  • A written plan before you buy anything

How it works

How does the audit work?

01AccessYou give us temporary admin access, or share your screen with us.
02AuditRouter, modems, Wi-Fi and exposure from outside checked.
03ReportFindings in plain English, most urgent first.
04FixChanges made remotely with your approval, one at a time, each tested.
05PlanOptional: a design for separate networks and two internet lines.
FAQ

Questions we get asked

Can you check our network without visiting?
Yes. Router and modem settings can be reviewed and changed remotely with access you grant, and we check from outside what the internet can see.
Will changes interrupt the office?
We make changes one at a time, in a quiet window, and test each before moving on. Anything that needs a restart is agreed first.
Do you replace our router?
Only if it cannot be made safe or cannot do what you need. We recommend equipment; installing it needs hands on site, which we guide.
How do you access the network remotely afterwards?
Through a private encrypted network with key-only logins, so no admin page is left open to the internet.
Is a VPN enough?
A VPN helps, but only if it is locked down. We restrict who can connect, from where, and keep the rest of the network closed.
How is it priced?
A monthly plan per office or per computer, quoted after a short audit. Ask for a quote and tell us how many PCs, Macs and sites you have.
