The refrigerant change, in plain words

R-410A is on its way out. Here is what that means for you.

      1

Your current AC is fine to repair

Systems that run on R-410A can keep being serviced and recharged. Nobody can force you to replace a working unit.

      2

      New systems use A2L refrigerants

Since 1 Jan 2025, new home AC and heat pump systems are built for R-454B or R-32. They warm the planet far less if they leak, and they are rated "mildly flammable", so they need trained hands and the right tools.

      3

We tell you which one you are getting

Some older R-410A stock can still be installed. Every Gulfmark quote names the refrigerant, so you can compare like with like.

As of Oct 2026. Rules can change: check the EPA's current guidance.

      R-454B A2L466

Commonly cited 100-year GWP values. A 1 lb leak of R-410A has roughly the warming effect of about a ton of CO2.

      OUTSIDE 98°F
Called at 7am with the house at 86. Dario was there by 10, found a dead capacitor, showed it to me and had us cooling before lunch. The price matched what the site said.

      OUTSIDE 91°F
They talked me out of a new system. Sealed the attic ducts and added a dehumidifier instead, and the upstairs finally feels like the downstairs.

      OUTSIDE 41°F
Heat strips quit during the January freeze. Wait was longer than I hoped, but they called with an honest time and the after-hours fee was explained up front.

      Questions

      Straight answers

Is there still a federal tax credit for a new AC or heat pump?
No. The federal 25C credit ended for systems installed after 31 Dec 2025, so we never promise it. If you installed earlier, ask a tax professional. IRS page.
      Are there local rebates?
Some utility and electricity-provider programs offer rebates on efficient systems. Amounts change often, so we check at quote time and never count a rebate as certain. ENERGY STAR rebate finder, check current amounts.
What does an after-hours visit cost?
The $89 diagnostic plus a $79 after-hours fee (both samples) on nights, Sundays and holidays. We say it on the phone before we send anyone.
What should I set my thermostat to in summer?
Many utilities suggest around 78°F when you are home. If 78 feels sticky, the problem is often humidity, not temperature, and that is fixable.

Smell gas? Leave the house now, then call your gas company's emergency line or 911 from outside. Don't switch lights on or off.

CO alarm sounding? Get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911.
